An American citizen, Faye Hall, who was held by the Taliban for two months, has been released. Hall is now in the care of Qatari officials and is expected to return home soon. Hall was arrested by the Taliban in February while visiting Afghanistan's central Bamiyan province. She was detained alongside a British couple, Barbie and Peter Reynolds, and their Afghan interpreter. While Hall has been freed, the Reynolds couple remains in Taliban custody.
The couple, who married in Kabul in 1970, have been running educational programs in the region for decades and chose to remain in Afghanistan even after the Taliban regained control in 2021.
Upon her release, Hall appeared in a video shared on US President Donald Trump's Truth Social account. Smiling and seemingly in good health, she expressed gratitude, saying, "I am so glad you’re in the office. It’s the new era. And in this situation, I am glad you’re the President, and thank you for bringing me home. I have never been so proud to be an American citizen."
In the caption accompanying the video, Trump expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thank you, Faye—truly honored by your words!"
Hall’s Arrest
Hall, who was identified by the Taliban's interior ministry as a Chinese-American, was reportedly detained for allegedly operating a drone without authorisation, according to a CNN report. The exact reasons for her arrest remain unclear, but her detention highlighted ongoing concerns about the Taliban's treatment of foreigners in Afghanistan.

US Withdrawal And Its Aftermath
The chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021 has been a point of contention in American politics. Trump, who had originally negotiated the US exit with the Taliban by agreeing to a 14-month deadline, has blamed former president Joe Biden for the disorderly final evacuation. The withdrawal included a deadly bombing at Kabul airport that killed 170 Afghan civilians and 13 US soldiers.
