The Trump administration has triggered a diplomatic ripple by releasing an official map of India that depicts the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), as an integral part of India. The map was published by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) alongside details of a newly announced interim trade agreement between New Delhi and Washington, and marks a clear departure from Washington’s earlier cartographic caution on the sensitive region.

India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable part of its sovereign territory and has rejected any external mediation or reinterpretation of its borders. However, on previous occasions, maps released by US government agencies, including the State Department, clearly demarcated PoK, reflecting a stance mindful of Pakistan’s claims. The latest map, however, makes no such distinction, effectively rejecting Islamabad’s long-held position.

Why Map Matters For India

While India does not require validation of its territorial claims from any foreign government, the symbolism of the map is significant. It signals a subtle but notable shift in US official representation, especially at a time when New Delhi and Washington are recalibrating their relationship after months of strain under President Donald Trump’s unpredictable approach to trade and diplomacy.

Trade Tensions Give Way To Interim Agreement

The timing of the map’s release is crucial. Just weeks ago, the Trump administration had slapped India with tariffs of up to 50 per cent, the highest imposed on any US ally, amid a trade deadlock. Under the new interim trade framework, those tariffs have now been slashed to 18 per cent, the lowest among Asian nations, offering major relief to Indian exporters.

As part of the agreement, India will eliminate or significantly reduce import duties on all US industrial goods and a wide range of American agricultural and food products. These include dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, soybean oil, wine, spirits, and fresh and processed fruits. In return, American products gain expanded access to the Indian market.

USD 500 Billion Purchase Commitment

According to a joint statement, India has also expressed its intention to purchase USD 500 billion worth of US energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology products, and coking coal over the next five years. “The US and India are pleased to announce that they have reached a framework for an Interim Agreement regarding reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade,” the statement said.

In a related development, President Trump signed an executive order removing the additional 25 per cent import duty imposed on India in August last year over its purchase of Russian oil. The order cited India’s “significant steps” and its commitment to stop directly or indirectly importing oil from Moscow.
