The Washington Post has announced layoffs of more than 300 journalists and newsroom staff at the behest of its owner, billionaire Jeff Bezos, sparking outrage on social media. The Post has discontinued its sports section and its stories book division, after which the employees described this as the darkest moment in the history of The Washington Post.

The Washington Post confirmed a sweeping restructuring this week, cutting nearly 30 per cent of its workforce. Journalists covering race, culture, technology, books, international affairs, and even active war zones lost their jobs. This painful news was delivered to the staff via a video call.

Why the Washington Post Laid Off Journalists

Executive Editor Matt Murray explained that the Post's readership had been steadily declining, resulting in heavy financial losses. Almost every desk was affected by these layoffs and no one was spared.

The sports section was hit hard by the cuts, despite covering a large portion of international news and being regarded as one of the most influential in American journalism. While some sports journalists were fired, others were asked to join the features department.

Who Owns The Washington Post

The Washington Post, a news website and newspaper, is owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos. Based in Washington, DC, the newspaper began in 1877 as a four-page publication. It was bought by the Meyer-Graham family in June 1933 in a bankruptcy auction and ran for eight decades, till in 2013, when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the media house.

The layoffs of journalists have led to massive backlash against Bezos wth people highlighting his enormous wealth touching USD 250 billion. US Senator Bernie Sanders took to X to criticise the move, saying, "If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend USD 75 million on the Melania movie and USD 500 million for a yacht to sail off to his USD 55 million wedding to give his wife a USD 5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff. Democracy dies in oligarchy."

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said, “When Jeff Bezos bought WaPo, he immediately took control of the opinions section. Now, he's laying off hundreds of journalists, including those covering Amazon. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the result of billionaires with vested political agendas taking over our media.”
