Another Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district late on Tuesday night, just days after the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, raising fresh concerns over mob violence. Police said the incident occurred around 11 pm in Hosendanga village of Kalimohor union in Pangshaupazila, where the victim, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was attacked over allegations of extortion. One of his associates was arrested during the incident, and two firearms were recovered, authorities said. 

He was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead around 2 am, officials said. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar said police reached the spot after receiving information about the attack.

During the operation, one of Samrat’s associates, Mohammad Selim, was arrested, and two firearms, a pistol and a one-shot gun, were recovered from his possession. Samrat’s body was later sent to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Extortion Claim Led To Mob Killing: Police

Police officials said Samrat had at least two cases registered against him, including a murder case, at Pangsha Police Station. Locals alleged that he had formed a criminal gang and was involved in extortion and other illegal activities for a long time. According to preliminary accounts, Samrat had recently returned to Bangladesh after staying in India for an extended period and allegedly demanded extortion money from a villager, Shahidul Islam.

On Wednesday night, Samrat and several associates reportedly went to Shahidul’s house to collect the money. When residents raised an alarm shouting “robbers,” locals gathered and assaulted Samrat. While some of his associates managed to flee, Selim was caught with weapons, police said.

Series Of Mob Attacks In Bangladesh

The Rajbari killing comes just days after the lynching of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka on December 18. Das was beaten to death over allegations of making derogatory remarks about Islam, and his body was allegedly tied to a tree and set on fire, triggering nationwide outrage. In recent weeks, mobs have also targeted diplomatic properties, including stone-pelting at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong.
