A co-worker of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man who was brutally killed in Bangladesh, has shared a chilling account of the incident, describing how a mob attack unfolded in full public view. Speaking to NDTV, the witness said Dipu Das was targeted amid an atmosphere of growing hostility towards Hindu minorities in the country. According to the witness, Dipu Das, a factory worker and father of a young girl, became a target after some individuals at his workplace, who had failed to secure jobs, allegedly began spreading false rumours accusing him of blasphemy.

Such allegations often trigger violent reactions in Bangladesh. The witness said Dipu Das was summoned to the factory’s human resources office and forced to resign.

Handed Over To Mob Outside Factory

“There were outsiders along with factory workers. He was handed over to them,” the witness told NDTV. He said Dipu Das was escorted out of the factory gate and handed over to a waiting crowd. What followed was a brutal assault just outside the factory premises, where the mob beat him with sticks, striking his face and chest repeatedly. “He was bleeding a lot,” the witness said. 

The violence escalated after Dipu Das collapsed. The witness said the mob dragged his body for nearly a kilometre, hung it from a tree and set it on fire. “The mob was full of Muslim people. We were there but we couldn’t say a single word,” he said, adding that fear prevented bystanders from intervening. “They were behaving like demons.”

No Evidence Of Blasphemy, Say Authorities

Authorities later clarified that there was no evidence Dipu Das had committed blasphemy. Despite this, the killing has left the Hindu community in his village deeply shaken, with residents describing an enduring sense of fear and insecurity. 

DN Chatterjee, praesidium member of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said minorities in Bangladesh “are not safe” and warned of a rapidly worsening security situation. Speaking to ANI, he accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of inaction during volatile times, calling the situation “terrible” and “highly dismal.”
