Andheri-Ghatkopar Shuttle: Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) has decided to launch a shuttle service between Andheri and Ghatkopar, in a bid to enhance service frequency and accommodate more commuters during peak hours on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. It is one of the busiest lines in Mumbai Metro due to which commuters have to wait for trains during peak hours.
The authorities have also conducted trials of the shuttle services on March 6, which turned out to be a successful attempt. During this time, alternate trains were operated between Versova and Andheri, while others ran the full distance to Ghatkopar, said a TOI report.
"We tried and tested a new train schedule to check the possibilities of boosting frequency during peak hours on the Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch. In good news, the results were encouraging. Now, we are closely analysing the impact to optimise future operations," the media report quoted an MMOPL official.
Andheri-Ghatkopar Shuttle Services to Facilitate At Least 5,000 People
Of the 60,000 commuters using Metro One during peak hours, only about 7,500 travel to stations like Azad Nagar, D N Nagar, and Versova, while the majority—87.5 per cent (52,500 commuters)—travel between Andheri and Ghatkopar.
Authorities expect that the shuttle service will accommodate an additional 5,000 passengers during peak hours.
The new service will also improve train frequency on the busy Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch. As a result of which, the headway will be reduced from 220 seconds to 205 seconds—an over 8 per cent increase in capacity.
At present, Metro One operates around 430 trips on weekdays, with services running from 5:30 am to 11:25 pm from Versova and until 11:50 pm from Ghatkopar. Launched in June 2014, Mumbai Metro One provides a crucial alternative to the congested Andheri-Kurla Road, home to numerous corporate offices and hotels.
