The security cover of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was upgraded after intelligence inputs, informed state minister Girish Mahajan on Saturday. In view of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election, the state police has buttressed the security cover of Fadnavis, who is also the Home Minister, with ex-Force One personnel as a precautionary measure.
Fadnavis enjoys 'Z plus' security cover at present, which is taken care of by the Maharashtra police's Special Protection Unit, he added. "Fadnavis' security had been upgraded after inputs from Intelligence," Mahajan, a senior state BJP leader, told reporters in Pune.
The intercepted communications by the intelligence teams suggested the threat to the BJP leader’s life, according to highly-placed sources in the state home department, as quoted by News18. Without specifying any groups, they said they are investigating the nature and extent of the potential threats, and urged Fadnavis to exercise caution.
Ex-Force One Commandos Deployed
Earlier, the state police upgraded the security of Fadnavis with 12 ex-Force One commandos as a precautionary measure, citing security reasons in view of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly election.
The intelligence revealed that some groups are preparing a planned attack on Fadnavis ahead of the state election. In response, the state police conducted a thorough review of his security arrangements and increased it accordingly, as per News18 sources.
They added that the extended security measures have been put in place at the BJP leader’s official residence in Mumbai and his residence in Nagpur. It will be present during his public engagements too, they said.
The Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024 will take place on November 20, while the votes for all 288 seats will be counted three days later, on November 23.
