Mumbai Eastern Freeway Extension: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started the construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a new 13.9-kilometre, six-lane corridor, aiming to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time.

Once completed, the daily commute between Thane and South Mumbai will be reduced to approximately 25 to 30 minutes. The six-lane corridor will also ease congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, which currently experiences significant daily traffic.

“MMRDA has commenced construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a 13.9 km, fully elevated 6-lane high-speed corridor that will dramatically reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to 25–30 minutes, while easing daily congestion on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH)—one of Mumbai’s busiest arterial routes serving lakhs of commuters every day,” NDTV quoted MMRDA as saying.

Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension: Check Route, Access Points And More

The new Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension corridor will begin at Anand Nagar in Thane and end at Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar. The six-lane corridor will provide access at key locations, including Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd, and Ghatkopar.

In Thane, the corridor will connect with the Anand Nagar-Saket Elevated Road near the old Mulund Octroi Naka, which will create a continuous, seamless path towards the Samruddhi Expressway, enabling commuters to travel across the wider region with minimal stops.

According to the MMRDA, the extension will provide smoother, cleaner, more reliable journeys with shortened travel time, reduced fuel consumption and less emissions.

Design And Structure Of Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension

The Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension features new technology for elevated road construction in the region. Engineers are building 2.5-meter monopiles to support a single-pile, single-pier structure. The engineering allows for long 40-meter spans and uses efficient 25-meter single-deck segments.

The design strategically incorporates access ramps at Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction, and Vikhroli Junction and includes a multi-lane six-lane toll plaza near the Navghar Flyover to manage two-way traffic flow.

The MMRDA is progressing with the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, with teams having already completed the essential groundwork, including comprehensive surveys, soil tests, and detailed tracking of utilities. Following the completion of test piles, construction work on the main piles and pier casting is currently underway. Further construction work will commence once the foundations are ready.
