Kunal Kamra Row: Mumbai Police have summoned stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for questioning on Monday regarding his controversial remarks about Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. Although Kamra requested an extension until April 3 to appear, citing threats to his life, however, NDTV report cited police sources indicating that this request was denied.
The 36-year-old comedian faces various charges, including defamation and making statements that could incite public unrest. The controversy stems from a recent performance at Mumbai's Habitat studio, where Kamra performed a parody of the song "Bholi Si Surat" from the film Dil Toh Pagal Hai. In his routine, he labelled Shinde a "gaddar" (traitor), referencing Shinde's role in the 2022 rebellion that led to the fall of Uddhav Thackeray's government and the division of the Shiv Sena party.
Following the release of the video, angry Sena workers vandalised the studio, which is a popular venue for comedy shows. The next day, civic officials conducted a demolition operation at the studio, citing violations of building regulations. The management of the studio has announced its temporary closure, stating that they only provide a venue and do not control the content of performances.
Kamra has defended his remarks, asserting that it is unreasonable to attack a venue over a comedian's words. He compared such actions to irrationally overturning a lorry of tomatoes because one disliked a dish. He stated that he does not feel intimidated and is willing to cooperate with law enforcement and the courts. However, he questioned whether the law would be applied fairly against those who resort to vandalism when offended by jokes.
The situation has also escalated into a political issue. Eknath Shinde has accused Kamra of acting on behalf of the Opposition, while Uddhav Thackeray has defended the comedian, stating that his comments were not inappropriate and highlighted Shinde's past actions that led to the party's split.
