Maharashtra Assembly Polls 2024: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has called a review meeting on the preparedness of Congress for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, expected to be held by November this year. The meeting holds significance for the grand old party following its ‘surprising’ defeat in the Haryana elections, proving all pollsters wrong.
The meeting will be attended by Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, Vijay Wadettiwar, Prithviraj Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Varsha Gaikwad and Ramesh Chennithala. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to be present in the meeting.

The meeting comes days after Congress' shocking defeat in the recently concluded Haryana Assembly elections. The BJP secured victory in 48 out of 90 Assembly seats. The Congress, shaken by an internal rift between Bhupinder Hooda and Kumari Selja over ticket distribution, managed to bag 37 seats.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) members are demanding to contest more seats in the forthcoming elections. Shiv Sena (UBT), a key member of the MVA government, also questioned the Congress over its defeat in Haryana and asked the party about the possible reasons for the setback.
Notably, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, and Congress, gave jolt to the ruling Eknath Shinde-led Mahayuti alliance by leading on 29 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra, with the Opposition Congress emerging as the single-largest party in the State by leading on 13 constituencies.
