Maharashtra News: The Maharashtra government has decided to extend the Uttan-Virar Sea Link (UVSL) project up to Vadhavan Port, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced. The move aims to strengthen north-south connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and ease congestion on major routes such as the Western Express Highway, S.V. Road and Link Road.
55-Km Corridor with 24-Km Sea Bridge Planned
According to officials, the Uttan-Virar Sea Link will stretch over 55.12 km, including a 24.35-km sea bridge. It will also have connecting link roads of 9.32 km at Uttan, 2.5 km at Vasai and 18.95 km at Virar. Once completed, the corridor will offer a faster route linking the western suburbs with northern Maharashtra and beyond.
According to a News 18 report, the project was earlier planned as the Versova-Virar Sea Link (VVSL) by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). It was later handed over to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in October 2022 and restructured in February 2024 into two phases. Phase 1 covers Uttan to Virar, while Phase 2, from Virar to Palghar, is still under feasibility assessment.
Eight-Lane Route To Connect With Delhi–Mumbai Expressway
An MMRDA report stated that the sea link will form an eight-lane, high-speed route that connects directly to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The project aims to reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower pollution by diverting heavy traffic from key arterial roads. It is also expected to enhance connectivity to industrial and residential zones while encouraging regional trade.

The development is set to generate large-scale employment during both construction and operation stages. Authorities believe it will attract new investments, spur industrial growth and improve emergency response times across the region.
Vadhavan Port to Become Key Trade Gateway
Vadhavan Port, located near Dahanu about 130 km north of Mumbai, is a major deep-water port being developed under a partnership between Vadhavan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). The government has also cleared a 104.89-km freight corridor to link the port with the Samruddhi Mahamarg in Nashik, ensuring seamless cargo movement across the state.
