Maharashtra Local Body Election: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti has outperformed the opposition in the local polls, maintaining a lead on over 200 seats. While the ruling alliance is set to repeat its performance in the state Assembly election, the alliance was not united in the Sindhudurg district, as the Rane brothers, Nilesh and Nitesh Rane, had fielded their candidates against each other. In a key contest, Shiv Sena MLA Nilesh Rane-backed Shahar Vikas Aghadi (SVA) emerged victorious as its candidate clinched the key municipal council president’s post in Kankavli. Nilesh Rane has congratulated the winning candidate and the ruling alliance, further stating that there was no rift in the alliance.
Under the leadership of Nitesh Rane, BJP managed to win eight seats in Kankavli; however, the saffron party lost the president post of the municipal council due to the rift. Sandesh Parkar of the SVA, backed by Nilesh Rane, managed to win the key post, showing Nilesh's increasing influence in the region. While reacting to the results, he stated that voters have shown faith in his leadership and vision, adding that there is no rift in the Mahayuti alliance.
“Voters stood by us and helped us win in Kankavli and Malvan,” Rane told the reporters. “We do not want to speak about infighting within Mahayuti, as the elections are over now,” he further added. Ahead of the local polls, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had expressed discomfort by stating that the situation needed introspection.
“I stand behind everyone who behaves well. If anyone, even from my party, is in the wrong, I won’t stand with that person. The situation of Rane versus Rane is not good. Definitely, we all have to introspect about this situation post-elections,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying by PTI.
