Maharashtra Rains: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Pune and a Yellow Alert for Mumbai today, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple regions in Maharashtra. The alert comes amid a spell of intensified pre-monsoon showers, which have already begun to disrupt daily life in several districts.

Mumbaikars experienced a wet and gloomy start to their Sunday, as heavy rain lashed various parts of the city. The downpour caused widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and general disruption to routine activities. The IMD has forecast continued rain in Mumbai and adjoining areas, with more showers expected over the next few days.

Orange Alert In These Districts

Pune has been witnessing continuous rainfall for the past four to five days, adding to growing concerns of flooding in low-lying areas. The IMD has predicted very heavy showers for multiple districts today, including Pune, Satara, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Nagpur, and Chandrapur.

According to the IMD, a depression over Madhya Maharashtra is contributing to the current weather conditions. In a late-night update on 24 May, the weather agency reported that the system had moved east-northeastwards at a speed of 20 km/h. "It lay centred over Madhya Maharashtra as of 11:30 PM IST," the IMD posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The system is expected to continue on this path. “It is very likely to continue to move nearly east-northeastwards across south Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada & North Interior Karnataka and weaken gradually into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours,” IMD added.

In light of the forecast, the Pune district administration has advised residents to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid waterlogged zones, and follow safety measures. The Orange Alert also warns of the potential for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds in isolated areas.

As the pre-monsoon activity ramps up, residents across Maharashtra are bracing for more wet days ahead, with authorities urging the public to stay updated with official weather alerts.
