Maharashtra: A 16-month-old baby boy tragically died on Thursday after the ambulance transporting him was stuck for more than five hours in a severe traffic jam on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. The congestion on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway was caused by the ongoing construction work on the Thane-Ghodbunder Road, which serves as a key connector to the highway.

The stretch leading towards Thane had been closed from 6 AM to 9 PM to ease pressure on the city roads, inadvertently worsening the highway gridlock. The 16-month-old who was reported to have sustained critical pelvic injuries was initially receiving treatment at Galaxy Hospital in Chinchoti, Naigaon, NDTV reported.

Doctors at Galaxy Hospital advised the family to shift the baby boy to a hospital in Mumbai for further treatment. However, due to the long queue of vehicles congested on the highway, the ambulance was struck, failing to reach the city in time, and the boy died en route.

Similar Incidents In The Past

In a similar incident in July, a woman named Chhaya Kaushik also lost her life after being stuck in a traffic jam on the same stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. She was being transported from Mumbai to Palghar after sustaining severe injuries when a tree fell on her.

Her ambulance was also stuck in the same traffic congestion on Thane-Ghodbunder Road, leading to her death midway before receiving medical attention.

These recurring incidents highlight growing concerns over emergency access and infrastructure planning amid ongoing road repair work and closures on key routes in the Mumbai Metropolitan region.
