Mumbai Pollution: Mumbai is grappling with alarming pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings soaring higher than usual in various parts of the city. Recent updates from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate that cloudy weather is expected on Saturday, with temperatures ranging from a cool 18 degrees Celsius in the morning to a warm 32 degrees Celsius later in the day.

The Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app reported that as of 9:05 AM, Mumbai's air quality was categorised as 'moderate', with an AQI of 160. However, the reasons behind the troubling rise in AQI levels remain a concern for residents and officials alike.

Mumbai's Air Quality Declines

According to a Hindustan Times report, the major factor contributing to Mumbai's air quality decline is the persistence of smog in the city. Traditionally, smog tends to clear by 9:30 AM, but recent reports suggest it is lingering much longer, often not dissipating until 11 AM or later.

Factors Contributing To Mumbai's Deteriorating Air Quality

Several factors are exacerbating the pollution issue. First, the significant increase in construction activities across Mumbai is a crucial contributor. In 2023, there were about 6,000 construction sites active in the city. This number has now surged to approximately 11,000 projects, including various infrastructure developments. Notably, the R Central ward has the highest number of construction sites, with 942, followed by K East with 933, and K West with 815. In addition, the Central and Western suburbs are seeing the construction of numerous skyscrapers and towers.

Traffic congestion is another major issue. Mumbai is home to around 1.2 million private vehicles, leading to slow-moving traffic that further pollutes the air.

Other underlying causes include changes in wind patterns, cooling ocean surfaces, dust particles and the use of contaminated oil, all contributing to the city's deteriorating air quality. Residents are increasingly concerned about the health implications of this pollution crisis.
