The North Channel bridge, linking the Coastal Road Project to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link, opened for traffic on Monday after its inauguration by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on January 26, marking a milestone in the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP).

The bow-string arch bridge, a crucial addition to the city’s infrastructure, will open for vehicular traffic on January 27. This new route reduces travel time between Marine Drive and Bandra to just 10 minutes, a significant improvement from the earlier one-hour journey. Operational hours will be from 7 AM to midnight.

The newly inaugurated northbound bridge spans 827 meters, with 699 meters over the sea and 128 meters on land. Built using the innovative "Bow Arch String Girder" design, the bridge is 143 meters long, 27 meters wide, and 31 meters high, weighing approximately 2,400 metric tons.

Initially, only the southbound carriageway was operational. With the opening of the northbound carriageway, traffic from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link will now seamlessly flow into the coastal road, enhancing the commuting experience for thousands of daily travellers.

In addition to the bridge, four new interchange arms at Worli and Haji Ali were inaugurated. These interchanges enhance connectivity to key areas such as Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel and Lotus Junction, further streamlining traffic flow.

Mumbai Coastal Road Project Update

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project aims to improve connectivity from Nariman Point in South Mumbai to Dahisar in the northern suburbs. The first phase, launched in March 2024, linked Nariman Point to Bandra. The latest extension adds two bridges, incorporating advanced infrastructure to handle increased traffic efficiently.

The first phase, spanning Shamal Das Gandhi Marg to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link, is 94 per cent complete. Since its partial operation in March, the road has served over 50 lakh vehicles, averaging 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles daily.
