Mumbai Metro News: Mumbai will get a grand new public space this Independence Day, with the official opening of the long-awaited seafront promenade along the Coastal Road. The 7.47-km-long and 20-metre-wide promenade will open to citizens at 4:30 PM on August 15, promising to be a new recreational hub for the city.

According to a Free Press Journal report, the inauguration will take place in two phases. In the first phase, two completed stretches, a 5.25-km route from Priyadarshini Park to Haji Ali and from Baroda Palace to Worli, will be accessible to the public. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will virtually inaugurate the facility on August 14, while the Coastal Road itself will open for 24-hour traffic from midnight on Friday.

Twice the length of Marine Drive’s 3.5-km promenade, the new walkway runs from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Completed sections include a 2.75-km stretch from Tata Garden to Haji Ali and a 2.5-km stretch from Lovegrove Nullah to B.M. Thackeray Chowk. The opening also marks the launch of four pedestrian underpasses (PuPs), providing direct access to the seafront.

There will be 19 access points in total, with current pedestrian entry at locations such as Akruti Parking Building on Bhulabhai Desai Road, Vatsalabai Desai Chowk at Haji Ali Junction, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road near Worli Milk School, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli. All underpasses are equipped with ramps and stairs, ensuring accessibility for cyclists and persons with disabilities.

The promenade will feature fitness and leisure amenities, including a dedicated cycling track, landscaped gardens with coastal trees, seating areas, and flowering plants. According to civic officials, the remaining 2.5-km stretch between Haji Ali and Worli will be ready in about 18 months, along with the rest of the access points.

The Coastal Road project itself is a 10.58-km, 8-lane expressway linking Worli to Marine Drive, built at a cost of Rs 13,984 crore. Previously open only between 7:00 AM and midnight, it will now operate round the clock from August 15. The BMC is also constructing underground parking facilities at Bhulabhai Desai Marg and Haji Ali (1,200 vehicles), Worli Dairy (200 vehicles), and Worli Seaface (200 vehicles). Both Worli facilities are already complete.

Once fully operational, the Coastal Road promenade is expected to become one of Mumbai’s most popular open spaces, offering uninterrupted sea views and easy connectivity for thousands of daily visitors.
