In a tragic hit-and-run accident, a two-year-old girl died while an 11-year-old boy was injured after a car hit them near Mumbai's famous Lalbaugcha Raja Pandal early this morning.

The accident took place during the wee hours on Anant Chaturdashi, the day of immersion of Ganpati, which marks the end of the 10-day festival.

According to the police, the children were walking on the roadside when a car coming from the wrong direction struck them, News18 reported.

The driver of the car fled the scene after the accident. The police are identifying the vehicles and the driver responsible for the accident.

In the day, a grand visarjan procession was held with thousands of devotees thronging the roads. Roads were packed with people as beautifully decked idols of Lord Ganesh began their final journey.

On the route of procession, colourful 'rangolis' were drawn, even as parts of the city witnessed light to moderate showers since morning.

Processions of the famous Ganpatis from Lalbaug, including Lalbaugcha Raja, Chinchpoklicha Chintamani, Ballaleshwar of Bal Ganesh Mandal, Mumbaicha Raja of Ganesh Galli, Mahaganapati of Kalachowki, RangariBadak Chawl Ganapati, and Tejukaya Ganapati, had reached the main road by 1 pm.

By 1 pm, the visarjan processions of the Ganpatis of the famous pandals of Lalbaug, including Lalbaugcha Raja, Chinchpoklicha Chintamani, Ballaleshwar of Bal Ganesh Mandal, Mumbaicha Raja of Ganesh Galli, Mahaganapati of Kalachowki, RangariBadak Chawl Ganapati, and Tejukaya Ganapati, reached the main road. Any by 1:30 pm , it moved towards the sea front.
