Mumbai Cruise Terminal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) on September 20 at Indira Dock, calling it an important milestone for India’s maritime and tourism sector. The facility, developed under the Cruise Bharat Mission, is expected to give a strong boost to cruise travel in the country.
India’s Largest Cruise Terminal
MICT has been built at a cost of Rs 556 crore and covers 4,15,000 square feet, making it the largest cruise terminal in India. The terminal can berth five ships at the same time and has been designed to manage up to one million passengers annually.
Mumbai Cruise Terminal: Design And Passenger Experience
The terminal’s interiors reflect a blend of modern architecture and Mumbai’s maritime identity. Features such as a wavy ceiling, rose-gold finishes, minimalist design, and heritage-inspired décor have been included. Passengers will also find selfie points, maritime plaques and cultural elements aimed at improving the overall travel experience.
For smoother operations, the facility includes 72 immigration and check-in counters spread across 2,07,000 square feet. Parking space for more than 300 vehicles has also been created to cater to travellers and visitors.
Upcoming Cruise Operations
The Cordelia Empress will be the next cruise to dock at the terminal on September 22. It will sail from Mumbai to Goa and Lakshadweep the same day, before returning to Mumbai on September .
Part Of Cruise Bharat Mission
Officials described MICT as a flagship project of the Cruise Bharat Mission, which aims to make India a leading global cruise destination. The mission covers ocean, river, and island cruises and seeks to attract more domestic and international travellers.
The government has set a goal to increase cruise passenger numbers significantly in the coming years, targeting a major rise by 2029. With facilities to handle nearly 200 cruise ships annually and capacity for ships carrying up to 500 passengers, the new terminal is expected to play a central role in achieving this ambition.
