Mumbai Local Upgrade: In a historic upgrade to the Mumbai local train to ease the public commute system in Mumbai, the Central Railway (CR) is converting 20 of its 12-coach local trains into 15-coach trains. This is one of the most significant capacity expansions of the decade. The additional space is estimated to increase the passenger capacity by nearly 3.3 lakh per day.

According to sources quoted by the Mid-Day, with 3 extra coaches in each rake and 12-13 trips by these rakes, Mumbai locals will be able to serve an additional passenger count of something between 3,12000 to 3,36000 every day.

As per the input from Mid-Day sources, the Railways should also review and reduce the number of train services where needed. This step will help compensate for the extra running time required by longer rakes, along with the changed acceleration and braking patterns of 15-coach trains. Adjusting the frequency will ensure smoother operations and better punctuality on the network.

With the update in the timetable and adjustments in operation will ensure smoother integration of longer trains.
