Madh-Versova Bridge Update: In a major update for the Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has finally secured clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to construct a cable-stayed flyover connecting Versova with Madh Island, as per a report by The Indian Express.

The bridge was initially proposed 10 years ago; however, the clearance delayed the construction. The bridge is a crucial project to enhance the connectivity between two of the busiest places in the city by reducing the travel time from 1 hour and 30 minutes to merely 10 minutes.

At present, there is no direct route between Madh and Versova. The commuters have to travel via Link Road, S.V. Road, and Western Express Highway.

While it takes 45-60 minutes during peak hours, at times of heavy traffic and monsoon-related disruptions, this extends to 90 minutes. The bridge will help in reducing the traffic congestion significantly in Andheri, Madh, Borivali, and Gorai.

It is worth mentioning here that the distance between Madh and Versova is 22 km. The cable-stayed bridge spans about 2 km across Madh Creek. The bridge will have four lanes with a combined width of 27.5 metres. The bridge was first envisaged in 1967.

As MoEFCC has given a clearance, another clearance from the Bombay High Court is awaited, after which the formal work order will be issued. It is expected to be issued by late this year.

The construction of the bridge is likely to begin after that and is expected to be completed by 2028. The cost of the project, based on March 2024 estimates, was around Rs 1,800 crore. At present, the final cost is pegged at around Rs 2,395 crore
