Mumbai Metro Update: Mumbai’s Metro network is witnessing rapid growth as the city works to improve its public transport system and reduce road congestion. Traditionally dependent on local trains, buses and rickshaws, the metropolis is now shifting focus to an integrated Metro system to meet the demands of its rising population and daily commuters.
The recent developments indicate a significant acceleration in project completion, with several lines slated for partial or full opening in the near future. This ambitious infrastructure push aims to connect distant suburbs and commercial hubs, promising to ease the daily commute for millions.

Operational Metro Lines In Mumbai
At present, four Metro lines are operational in Mumbai, with services covering different parts of the city. These include:
Metro Line 1 (Blue): Running between Versova and Ghatkopar via Andheri, this 11.4-km elevated corridor was the first to become operational. It was built at a cost of Rs 2,356 crore.
Metro Line 2A (Yellow): Dahisar East to DN Nagar This 18.6-kilometre elevated line was developed at a cost of Rs 6,410 crore and plays a vital role in connecting the northern and western parts of the city.
Metro Line 7 (Red): Linking Dahisar East and Gundavali, this line spans 16.5 km and was constructed at a cost of Rs 6,208 crore.
Metro Line 3 (Aqua): A partially functional underground line covering 22 km between Colaba, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), and SEEPZ. The remaining sections are still under construction, with a total project cost of Rs 33,406 crore.
Mumbai Metro Timings
For commuters planning their journeys, the operational Metro lines adhere to the following timings:
Mumbai Metro 1, 2A and 7: These lines operate from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Mumbai Metro-3: This line runs until 10:30 PM.
Under-Construction Mumbai Metro Lines
Beyond the existing operational network, Mumbai's Metro future is bustling with activity. Several lines are currently under construction, while others are in advanced planning or proposed stages.
Apart from the running lines, several Metro corridors are under construction across Mumbai and its suburbs. These include parts of Lines 2B, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7A, 9, and 12. Together, they account for around 134 km of development. Key details include:
Line 2B (Yellow): Andheri-Mandale (23.6 km), with phased openings expected in 2025-2026. This line, costing Rs 10,986 crore, will extend the Yellow Line further south.
Remaining part of Line 3: An additional 11.5 km of the underground route is scheduled for completion in 2025.
Lines 4 & 4A (Green): Wadala through Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, with an expected opening by late 2025 or early 2026. This project has a cost of Rs 3,907 crore.
Line 5 (Orange): The route between Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan is under construction, with 12–13 km currently being built at a cost of Rs 8,416 crore.

Line 6 (Pink): Linking Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli, the 15-km line is around 78 per cent complete and expected to finish by late 2026.
Line 7A (Red): A 3.2-km extension from Gundavali to the airport, expected by late 2025.
Line 9 (Red): The 11-km stretch from Dahisar to Mira Bhayandar is targeted for completion by December 2026, costing Rs 4,400 crore.
Line 12 (Orange): Running from Kalyan to Taloja, this 23-km line is in its early stages with a cost of Rs 4,132 crore.
