Mumbai Metro News: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has made a strategic move to improve urban mobility by reducing congestion during peak hours on Lines 2A and 7.

As part of the efforts, the MMRDA has introduced 3 new rakes and 21 new services on these lines, taking the fleet to 24 from 21 and services to 305 from 284. The operational upgrade has been implemented by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL).

A successful pilot run was undertaken in this regard last week, which proved the upgrade's effectiveness during peak-hour rush. The decision was taken under the leadership of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde after the ridership on the Mumbai Metro set a new record of 3.01 lakh on July 8.

As the commuters are opting for metro services to travel across the city, the MMRDA is trying to avoid any congestion and provide smoother rides. Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, reacted to the record ridership and said, "Crossing the 3 lakh ridership milestone is not just a statistical achievement; it is a validation of our strategic vision and the credibility we’ve built over time. Under our ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ vision, we aim to make metro commuting the gold standard for urban mobility."

Frequency increased during peak hours

As the services have been increased, the headway during the peak hours has been reduced to 5 minutes 50 seconds against 6 minutes and 35 seconds. However, in order to optimise energy and maintain efficiency, the off-peak frequency remains at 9 minutes 30 seconds.
