Mumbai: With elections for the Mumbai and Thane municipal corporations expected soon, the Maharashtra government has increased its focus on large transport projects. Metro-4, which will connect Wadala and Ghatkopar to Thane and eventually extend towards Gaimukh, has now received renewed attention due to its importance for daily commuters.

Planners are examining ways to ensure that the line does not operate in isolation but becomes part of a connected transport network for the eastern suburbs.

Plan To Link Metro-4 With Suburban Rail

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun a detailed study to determine which suburban railway stations can be given direct access to the new corridor.

According to a Loksatta report, one of the main proposals is a 740-metre-long pedestrian bridge that will link the Kanjurmarg Metro-4 depot with Kanjurmarg railway station. The bridge, estimated to cost Rs 93 crore, aims to provide quick movement between local trains and the metro.

Senior officials say the purpose of the project is to offer smooth transfers that save time for passengers travelling across the eastern and central suburban belts.

Tender Issued; Construction Timeline Set

MMRDA has already floated a tender to select a contractor for the bridge. Once finalised, construction is expected to start soon and be completed within 18 months.
The bridge will include lifts, escalators and CCTV cameras to provide accessibility and safety. Officials believe the connection will encourage more people to use public transport as it will also provide access to BEST bus stops and other last-mile options such as taxis and autorickshaws.

Metro-4 Corridor And Future Expansion

The Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor covers 32.32 kilometres with 30 stations across busy residential and commercial zones.

Its extension, Line 4A from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, will add 2.7 kilometres and two elevated stations.

Authorities are looking at similar pedestrian connections at other points along the route to strengthen integration with the suburban railway network.
