Mumbai Metro Line 14 Update: The ambition and much-awaited Mumbai Metro Line 14 connecting Kanjurmarg and Badlapur is likely to be developed on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis, and the construction work is likely to start within a year, the Mid-Day reported.
According to the report, the senior officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have asserted that the authority is making efforts to get the construction work started within a year.
The Line 14, also known as the Magenta Line, will be a 39 m long stretch and is expected to reduce travel time by 1.5 to 2 hours as compared to road travel, which will contribute to decongestion and easing traffic on the bustling roads.
The MMRDA is anticipating that the line will see a daily ridership of around 7 lakh once the full route is built and operationalised.
The draft of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the line has been received from Milan Metro and has been approved by IIT Bombay. The DPR is awaiting state clearance.
Accordingly, the tenders for the construction are likely to be floated soon, and the work is expected to start shortly. The MMRDA has taken DPR from the Milan Metro as they are taking inspiration from its Metro system, which runs largely through underground tracks.
The Magenta Line will have underground tracks from Kanjurarg to Ghansoli and later elevated tracks from Ghansoli to Badlapur. The project is estimated to take shape with a whopping cost of Rs 18,000 crore. The ambitious project is part of MMRDA's vision to expand Metro connectivity to suburbs.
One of the major issues is that the proposed line passes through the Parsik Hills and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, and hence, the MMRDA will have to get an NOC and clearance from the forest and environment departments.
