Mumbai Metro Line 4 Phase 2 Update: Mumbai’s Metro expansion has reached a major milestone with a complex engineering achievement at Gandhi Nagar Junction in Vikhroli. In a remarkable display of precision and coordination, engineers have successfully begun installing a massive steel girder as part of Phase 2 of Metro Line 4.

The steel girder, an impressive 62.7 metres long and weighing about 540 tonnes, is being positioned 24 metres above the busy JVLR-LBS junction, all while managing live, heavy traffic, according to the Free Press Journal.

This crucial work is a big step towards completing the stretch between Cadbury Junction and Gandhi Nagar, which is expected to open by December 2026. Once ready, Metro Line 4 will link Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road to Kanjurmarg via Thane and Mulund, significantly reducing travel times and boosting connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.

The girder installation is especially challenging due to the tight space and constant traffic flow. The operation is being carried out in three stages: first, a 30-metre span is being placed over JVLR under Metro Line 6, followed by a 17-metre extension towards Vikhroli, and finally a 15-metre span heading towards Mulund.

The Gandhi Nagar Junction is transforming into a unique vertical transport hub. It features multiple layers of infrastructure with LBS Road at the bottom, the JVLR flyover above it, Metro Line 6 next, and now Metro Line 4 forming the topmost level. This innovative, stacked design marks a new era of urban mobility in one of Mumbai’s busiest areas.

Officials have confirmed that the girder installation is progressing as planned, giving a strong push to the overall Metro Line 4 project. When fully operational, this line, running from Wadala to Gaimukh, is expected to cater to more than 8 lakh (800,000) commuters daily. It promises to ease the load on Mumbai’s crowded roads and railway system, offering a faster, smoother travel option across the city.
