Mumbai News: The long-anticipated connection between the city’s metro and suburban rail networks is finally progressing. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed a series of foot overbridges (FOBs) to link key suburban railway stations with the forthcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A, which will run from Wadala in central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane.

Mumbai News: Pant Nagar, Vikhroli, Bhandup To Get FOB Links

According to a Hindustan Times report, these proposed footbridges will connect suburban railway stations to metro stations at Pant Nagar, Vikhroli and Bhandup, significantly improving convenience for commuters along the Central Line. Additionally, a footbridge is planned to link Metro Line 6 with Metro Line 3 at Aarey, facilitating smoother transfers between the city’s east-west and north-south corridors.

The HT report cited a senior official at MMRDA as stating, “FOBs will be built to connect with existing skywalks wherever feasible. Their lengths will range from 200 to 1,000 metres, depending on land availability.” Tenders have already been issued, with bids expected to be evaluated by the end of the month.

Mumbai: Pant Nagar To Get Safer Pedestrian Access

Vikhroli and Bhandup stations, located on LBS Road, are better positioned for integration with the suburban rail, while pedestrian FOBs in Pant Nagar will make transfers safe and efficient, despite the greater distance.

Mumbai: Rs 129 Crore Sanctioned For Four FOBs

The estimated cost for the four proposed FOBs is Rs 129 crore, with completion expected within 15 months, including the monsoon season. Additionally, relocating underground utilities such as power cables and water lines will incur an extra Rs 7.98 crore.

Transport experts have welcomed this initiative. Madhu Kotian, president of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh, remarked, “These FOBs signal a shift towards seamless travel, reducing crowding at suburban stations by directing metro passengers elsewhere.”

Mumbai: Aarey Junction To Become Major Interchange

The Aarey junction is set to become a vital interchange hub, with plans for a 200-300 metre footbridge connecting the under-construction Seepz station on Metro Line 6 to the Aarey JVLR station on Metro Line 3.

MMRDA officials have assured that a comprehensive plan for multi-modal integration is being developed, with future projects including footbridges linking Ram Mandir railway station to Goregaon East Metro station and new access points for Nirlon Knowledge Park and Oberoi Mall.

An MMRDA official stated, “We are committed to a holistic development approach that integrates metro lines with suburban stations, commercial centres, and major roads, ensuring comprehensive last-mile connectivity.”
