Mumbai Monorail: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to stop monorail operations for a few days to carry out a full maintenance drive. The move follows a series of technical failures that have raised concerns about passenger safety and system reliability.

The Times Of India report cited Officials as confirming that, a public notice will be issued before services are halted. During the suspension, new rakes will be added and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety will inspect the corridor before services resume. A high-level committee has also been formed to suggest long-term measures to improve safety and performance.

The decision comes after yet another breakdown on Monday morning. A monorail stalled between Antop Hill Bus Depot and GTBN station in Wadala at 7:16 AM due to a technical snag. Seventeen passengers were on board at the time. They were shifted to another train and taken to the next station within 25 minutes, officials said.

This was the second incident in less than a month. On 19 August, more than 500 passengers were stranded inside a monorail near Mysore Colony station for hours during heavy rainfall, before being rescued by the fire brigade. Another train was stuck at Acharya Atre Nagar station, leading to the evacuation of 200 passengers.

Mumbai Monorail Shutdown

This is not the first complete shutdown for the city’s monorail. In November 2017, services were suspended for nearly nine months after an empty train caught fire near Mysore Colony. Operations restarted only towards the end of 2018.

The MMRDA has said the suspension is necessary to ensure smoother functioning and to avoid disruptions that have troubled passengers repeatedly in recent months.
