Mumbai police revealed that the vehicle was driven by 30-year-old Bhavika Dama, who was accompanied by her friend, Koram Bhanushali. They were travelling towards Asalfa via LBS Road to drop Bhanushali home when the crash took place. CCTV footage from the spot shows two women and one man stepping out of the SUV. While the women stayed back, the male passenger fled before police arrived.

According to a Indian Express report, Liquor bottles were recovered from inside the car, leading to suspicion that the occupants were drunk at the time of the accident. Both women were taken into custody and sent for medical examination. “The driver seems to have lost control while speeding. We are verifying if they were under the influence of alcohol,” said Pawan Patil, Inspector at Ghatkopar Police Station.

Emergency services reached the spot soon after the incident and the injured were rushed to hospital. While the two women escaped unhurt, police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding male passenger.

An FIR has been registered against the driver and further investigation is underway.
