Mumbai News: Mumbai suburban railway stations are all set to get a major boost in view of rising commuter footfall. Authorities are looking at constructing elevated decks above platforms at 17 key stations. These decks are being planned to give additional space for passengers, essential amenities, and commercial stalls while decongesting crowded platforms. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is leading the project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3A). The completion is likely between 2025 and 2027. Built over 70-80 years ago, most suburban stations in Mumbai are finding it difficult to keep pace with increasing commuter footfall.

The new decks will connect directly to all foot overbridges (FOBs), ensuring smooth passenger movement and reducing bottlenecks at platforms. Shops, offices, and other amenities currently occupying platform space will also be relocated to these decks, media reports said.
