Mumbai News: Mumbai may soon get a ropeway system connecting Aarey Metro Station on Metro Line 3 with the well-known Film City in Goregaon. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is working on the proposal and is also looking at the possibility of extending the route up to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). The idea is to improve access to this busy area, which attracts both tourists and workers but faces traffic issues and lacks proper public transport.
The Times Of India report cited Officials from MMRCL as stating that, the ropeway will serve as a modern and eco-friendly transport option. It will help daily travellers, people working in Film City and tourists by offering quicker travel and better links with the metro. The distance of the proposed ropeway is likely to be between 2 to 3 kilometres, depending on the final route chosen. The system is expected to carry between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers every hour in one direction.
The new system will connect directly with Metro Line 3 at the Aarey JVLR Station. This will make it easier for people to switch from the metro to the ropeway. MMRCL is currently studying different technologies—mono-cable, bi-cable or tri-cable gondolas to decide which suits the area best in terms of capacity and environmental concerns.
To reduce pressure on government funds, the project will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Private companies will take care of design, construction, finance, operation and handover under the DBFOT model. MMRCL will look after approvals and ensure the ropeway fits into the larger metro system.
The project is part of MMRCL’s efforts to promote smooth, multi-modal travel in Mumbai. As Metro Line 3 nears completion, such projects are important for easy travel to and from stations.
Film City currently depends on a single approach road via Western Express Highway, which is often jammed. The ropeway will offer a direct route through the hilly area, reducing road traffic and saving time. If it goes ahead, this will be one of the city’s first ropeways and could become a model for similar systems in other parts of Mumbai.
