The police investigation into the Mumbai terror threat hoax has revealed a motive of revenge behind the misadventure that sent chills through the city and the nation.

After receiving the threat message on Thursday, the police swung into action. The high vigil was maintained, and the investigation into the threat started.

Within hours, a man named Ashwini Kumar, a native of Patna, was arrested from a housing society in Noida's Sector 79. Kumar was living in the society for the last five years and posed as an astrologer and Vastu expert.

He was handed over to the Mumbai Police later. During the interrogation, Kumar confessed to sending the terror threat and revealed that it was out of personal vendetta.

According to a report by The Times of India, he wanted to take revenge on a friend-turned-foe, who filed a case against him in Patna two years ago.

"He wanted to take revenge from a friend who had filed a case against him in Patna in 2023, in which he was jailed for three months. To settle scores, Kumar sent the threat message to the Mumbai Police using his (friend's) name," ToI quoted the official as saying.

According to the officials, the message was received on the traffic police's WhatsApp helpline on Thursday, in which the sender had claimed that 14 terrorists had entered the city.

It added that they entered with human bombs and 400 kgs of RDX and planted it in 34 vehicles to blow up the city. The case of the threat was registered at Worli police station, and the investigation was taken over by the crime branch.
