The Mumbai traffic police penalised 17,800 motorists and collected Rs 89.19 lakh in fines for various traffic violations during the New Year celebrations, police said on Wednesday. The enforcement drive, conducted from New Year’s Eve until early Wednesday, targeted offences such as drunk driving, signal jumping, helmetless riding and entering one-way roads.

E-challans were issued for a range of violations, with the most frequent offences including obstructing traffic flow (2,893 cases), riding without helmets (1,923 cases) and jumping signals (1,731 cases). Drunk driving led to 153 challans, while 109 motorists were penalised for using mobile phones while driving. 

Speeding violations resulted in 842 challans, and 432 motorists were fined for not wearing seat belts. Other offences included triple riding (123 cases), driving on the wrong side (40 cases), and two instances of dangerous driving.

The crackdown was part of heightened security and traffic management efforts in Mumbai as the city welcomed 2025 with grand celebrations. Popular locations like the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Bandra Bandstand and Juhu Chowpatty saw large gatherings, while live music, cultural performances and decorations added to the festive atmosphere.

To ensure public safety, over 14,000 police personnel were deployed across the city, supported by multiple checkpoints and increased patrolling in crowded areas. Authorities closely monitored commuters and took action to prevent any untoward incidents.
