Mumbai News: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set for a major upgrade in coastal connectivity, with Maharashtra approving plans for a 120-km high-speed expressway linking Mumbai to Vadhavan Port. The Mumbai-Vadhavan Expressway Corridor (MVEC) is expected to ease heavy congestion on existing routes and offer a faster alternative for commuters travelling between South Mumbai and the northern suburbs, including Vasai, Virar and Palghar.
Uttan–Virar Sea Link Set to Become India’s Longest
A key component of this project is the proposed Uttan-Virar Sea Link, a 24.35-km bridge that will become India’s longest sea link once completed. Designed as a six-lane, access-controlled corridor, the sea link will include emergency lanes, navigational spans and advanced traffic management systems. Officials said more than 30 km of connecting roads will link the corridor with national highways, expressways and the city’s coastal road network, creating a continuous high-speed stretch along the western coastline, as reported by a News 18 report
High-Speed Corridor to Ease Major Mumbai Traffic Routes
The government expects the project to significantly reduce travel time and ease pressure on major north–south routes such as the Western Express Highway, SV Road and Link Road. The corridor is also being viewed as an important mobility alternative that will serve the expanding suburban population.

Expressway Expected To Boost Housing, Tourism and Port-led Growth
Beyond transport benefits, MVEC is being positioned as an economic catalyst for the region. The expressway is expected to open up new development areas along Uttan, Bhayandar, Vasai and Virar, while supporting tourism and affordable housing. Its extension to Vadhavan Port which is set to become India’s largest deep-sea port is likely to boost port-led industries, logistics operations and small enterprises.
Officials said early assessments indicate that faster movement and reduced congestion could help cut vehicular emissions, aligning the project with the region’s environmental goals.
With the proposal now forwarded to the Centre for approval, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is preparing for what could become one of India’s most impactful coastal infrastructure projects. If completed on time, the Mumbai-Vadhavan Expressway Corridor may redefine travel and economic activity along the state’s western coastline.
