Mumbai Weather: Mumbai is likely to experience heavy rainfall over the weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for 23 and 24 May. The city may witness strong winds and thunderstorms as a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea begins to intensify.
The IMD has warned that the low-pressure area, currently forming over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Konkan-Goa coast, could turn into a depression within 36 hours. As a result, districts along the Konkan belt are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Maharashtra Weather Forecast
According to the IMD, Raigad district is under a red alert for May 23, while Ratnagiri has been issued a red alert for both May 22 and 23. An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg and the ghat areas of Pune and Satara. These regions could experience intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging from 50 to 60 km/h in some parts.
The Times Of India report cited Shubhangi Bhute, head of IMD Mumbai as stating that, a cyclonic circulation is present over the east-central Arabian Sea, and it is likely to develop into a low-pressure area within 12 hours. She added that this system is expected to move northwards, affecting large parts of the Konkan region.
Maharashtra Wind Speed
The IMD has stated that wind speeds across Maharashtra’s coastal districts will generally remain between 30 and 40 km/h, but may reach up to 60 km/h in some locations.
Weather officials attribute the current spell of pre-monsoon rain to a combination of high moisture levels from the sea, localised heat during the day and wind convergence. These factors are enhancing rainfall activity ahead of the official monsoon season.
Why Is It Raining In Mumbai
Weather enthusiast Athreya Shetty noted that an unusual low-latitude western disturbance earlier in May played a role in setting off the current wet weather pattern. He said that this system pushed away the usual dry Arabian Sea anticyclone, allowing moist westerly winds to return and increase rainfall over Mumbai and surrounding regions.
So far in May, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas have recorded over 100 mm of rainfall. The IMD has also predicted moderate rainfall for Sunday, with more rainy days likely in the coming week.
