Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to start work on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, a vital West-East Mumbai link connecting Goregaon to Mulund. The GMLR will cut travel time from 75 minutes to 25 minutes. Although preparatory work has begun, the main construction is set to start next month after the arrival of the last shipment of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) from Japan. The twin tunnels on the GMLR will be carved out by two massive TBMs. Once the shipment arrives, the assembly work of the TBMs will begin, and after a few months, tunnels will be carved out.
Goregaon-Mulund Link Road: Check Start Date, Other Details
The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is one of the widest road projects by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Indian Express reported. It will directly connect Goregaon in the western suburbs to Mulund in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. The highlight of the project is two 6.65 km long tunnels, which will start at Film City in Goregaon and emerge near Amar Junction in Mulund.

Interestingly, these two tunnels will pass beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, cutting through challenging terrain. The twin tunnels will be carved out by two massive Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), with each cutting the tunnel about 14.5 metres wide. A total of 77 trailers carrying TBM parts are expected to arrive in Mumbai from Japan, out of which 54 trailers have arrived, and the remaining 23 trailers will arrive by 15 August, after which the assembly process will begin.
In around four months, the engineers will assemble the first TBM at a launch shaft near Film City. Meanwhile, piling and shaft preparation works are underway, and the TBMs are expected to bore the twin tunnels in parallel.
