Thane Flyovers Closed: Residents of Mumbai's western suburbs, as well as those travelling to and from Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Pune and other nearby regions, are bracing for a potential inconvenience in the coming days. The three major flyovers along the Ghodbunder Road in Thane are set to undergo temporary closure for essential repair work.
According to a report by the Times of India, the affected flyovers are located at the Patlipada, Manpada and Majiwada junctions, all of which are crucial connectivity points for commuters. This planned closure is expected to impact the daily commute of a large number of individuals, including those using private vehicles, transport buses and heavy freight trucks.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has outlined its plan to address the deteriorating condition of these flyover structures. The Waghbil flyover has already undergone repairs, and now the focus shifts to the remaining three.
The PWD intends to carry out repair work on 484 meters of the Patlipada flyover, 380 meters of the Manpada flyover and 250 meters of the Kapurbawdi flyover. The primary task involves laying a fresh mastic layer to ensure a smoother driving experience during the upcoming monsoon season. A tender worth Rs 5.91 crore has been approved for this undertaking.
Ghodbunder Road serves as a critical alternative route, connecting the eastern and western express highways beyond Thane. It is utilised by motorists, buses and freight vehicles traveling to and from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The ongoing metro construction, which has already blocked some lanes on the Borivali-bound side, has further compounded the challenges faced by regular commuters in the area.

The PWD mentions the necessity of these repairs to prevent further damage to the decades-old road structures during the upcoming monsoon season. The Lok Sabha elections and ongoing works at Gaimukh Ghat have already delayed the repair schedule. The department estimates that an eight-day closure will be required to complete the work.
To minimise inconvenience, the PWD plans to conduct the repairs primarily at night and may prioritise the Patlipada flyover. However, the final scheduling will be determined in consultation with the Thane traffic police, who are yet to receive a formal request for traffic blocks. They have assured that any approved closures will be managed to cause minimal disruption to motorists.
