Mumbai Water Crisis: To make sure the current water reserve lasts longer, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 5 per cent cut in Mumbai's supply beginning on Thursday. Starting on June 5, this cut will double to 10 per cent.

Mumbai residents are advised not to worry, nevertheless, as the BMC is pleading with everyone to use water wisely.

Meanwhile, it has been requested that restaurants and hotels only provide water upon request. Mumbai residents are being urged to implement water-saving practices for commercial and industrial facilities as well as to routinely inspect water pipes for leakage.

Mumbaikars may contribute to water conservation and the BMC's efforts to effectively manage the city's water supply by implementing these actions.

Owing to October 2023's below-average rainfall, there is 5.64 per cent less water in the reservoir than there was the year before. Only 9.69 per cent of the yearly need of 14,47,363 million litres was being met by the 1,40,202 million litres that the dams providing water to Mumbai could hold as of May 25, 2024.

Mumbai will receive an extra 1,37,000 million litres from Bhatsa Dam and 91,130 million litres from Upper Vaitarna Dam in addition to the present supply.

The Indian Meteorological Department has also forecast a punctual arrival of the monsoon this year, offering further comfort. The water cuts would also affect Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, and other areas served by the BMC. These cutbacks will be in place until enough rainfall fills the water reserves.
