The Maharashtra government is pushing for infrastructural growth in the state with new expressways to augment connectivity. After the Samriddhi Expressway, Nagpur is set to get another big e-way, the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway.

The Maharashtra government has approved Rs 20,787 crore for the land acquisition for the greenfield expressway, which will run to a distance of 802.6 km. It will link Wardha district's Pawnar to Patra Devi in Sindhudurg.

HUDCO will arrange the funds and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will execute the project. 

Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway to cut travel time

The expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between Nagpur and Goa to 8 hours. At present, it usually takes 18-21 hours to travel between the cities by road.

The expressway will pass through 370 villages of 12 districts and connect key regions of Vidarbha, Marathwada, Western and Southern Maharashtra. The expressway will have six lanes and will be access controlled.

21 shaktipeeths and religious sites

The central feature of the road, for which it is named, the Shaktipeeth Expressway, is that it passes through 21 religious sites, including Shaktipeeths of Tuljapur, Mahur and Kolhapur.

The project faced disruptions due to protests by farmers as 8,100 of 8,419 hectares of the required land belong to farmers who fear large-scale displacement and losses.

Goa-Nagpur Shaktipeeth Expressway to connect other e-ways

The expressway will seamlessly connect multiple major corridors like:

-Jalna–Nanded Expressway near Parbhani

-Surat–Chennai Expressway near Tuljapur

-Pune–Bengaluru Expressway near Tasgaon
