Navi Mumbai Airport Update: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport on September 30, coinciding with the opening of the Worli-Cuffe Parade stretch on Metro Line 3. The inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport was planned earlier this year, but was postponed by the Mahayuti government due to Pitru Paksha, a period considered inauspicious for new beginnings in the Hindu calendar.
The inauguration was rescheduled to September 30, which coincides with the eighth day of the Navratri festival, an auspicious time for inauguration or new ventures. While NMIA has not issued an official statement, a senior CIDCO officer confirmed the inauguration of Phase 1 of the NMIA on September 30, Hindustan Times reported.
Navi Mumbai International Airport - Key Updates
- Infrastructure and Design Features: The Navi Mumbai International Airport will be established as a next-generation airport with two parallel runways, state-of-the-art passenger amenities and advanced green infrastructure.
- Sustainability Initiatives: In a major push towards sustainability, the NMIA will be powered by 37 megawatts of renewable energy, and all on-site vehicles will be electric or powered by alternative fuels.
- Baggage Handling Technologies: NMIA is equipped with an ultra-fast baggage handling system that uses a 360-degree barcode scanning technology. The technology is expected to deliver one of the fastest baggage claim experiences globally.
- Connectivity and Accessibility: The Navi Mumbai International Airport is designed for multi-modal access via road, rail and water transport. Supporting infrastructure includes: Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link), Coastal Road (under construction), proposed elevated road to Thane and future metro link and underground terminal access. This will allow commuters to travel from transport bays to gates within 500 metres of walking distance.
