Mumbai Monorail Service Disruption: Starting September 20, the Mumbai Monorail services will be temporarily suspended until further notice, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Tuesday. The decision to temporarily halt Monorail services came after major disruptions over the past month. The MMRDA expedited the process following the latest incident on Monday morning when a monorail train was stalled at a curve between two stations due to a technical failure after heavy rain.

The Mumbai Monorail services are being shut down to facilitate system upgrades aimed at ensuring long-term reliability. The upgrade may take up to two months, Hindustan Times reported. Once completed, commuters can expect services at shorter intervals with trains running every 8-10 minutes, down from the previous 20-25 minute intervals.

Planned Upgrades To The Mumbai Monorail:

World-Class Signalling System Upgrade: The Mumbai Monorail is being equipped with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) for the first time. Indigenously developed in Hyderabad, this system aims to enhance safety, reduce train intervals and ensure long-term reliability.

90 Train Detection Systems.
Multiple WATC units deployed.
Wayside signalling work is completed with integrated testing underway.

Rolling Stock Modernisation

In addition to signalling upgrade, the MMRDA is also modernising the monorail fleet with 10 new ‘Make-in-India’ rakes supplied by M/s MEDHA in collaboration with SMH Rail.

Updates on the New Rakes:

Eight Rakes Delivered.
9th Rake offered for inspection.
10th rake in the final assembly stage.
