Pune Metro Update: In a major update for the commuters, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) stated that the operation on the much-awaited metro Line 3 is set to begin in March 2026. The officials stated that the metro services between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar will provide conveniences to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion. The metro services in Pune began three years ago, but it is not utilised by thousands of people due to its limited network. The authority also stated that several expansion projects are set to be announced in the upcoming months.
While providing details, the officials stated that while no new metro route was inaugurated in 2025, the pink line will be inaugurated by the end of March in 2026. Along with providing a significant boost to the regional connectivity, the metro line will also improve the financial activities. “We have directed the implementing agency, PITCMRL (Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd), to start the operations by March 31. They have been given an extension in the deadline many times, but now no more extensions will be given,” a PMRDA official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
Earlier on Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also stated that the construction work is likely to finish soon, adding that the operations will start within the deadline. “The work on Line 3 should be completed on time, and the operations should start as per the deadline,” Fadnavis stated.
The Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar corridor is worth Rs 8,313 crore and is funded through a combination of private investment of Rs 1,315 crore, institutional loans of Rs 4,789 crore, a state government contribution of Rs 90.58 crore, and central government viability gap funding of Rs 1,224.8 crore. The original deadline for the inauguration of the line was March 2025. However, it faced constant delays due to multiple factors.
