Pune Metro Update: The Pune Metro witnessed a significant surge in ridership on Friday and Sunday after key roads remained closed due to the Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi processions. The Pune Metro Rail Corporation stated that more than 5.45 lakh passengers travelled on the metro on the two consecutive days. The authority further stated that 319,066 passengers used the services on June 20, making it the highest-ever single-day ridership for Pune Metro. The officials stated that the commuters chose metro services to cut the travel time and avoid traffic congestion due to the key processions.

While providing details, the authority stated that while 150,385 commuters travelled on line 1 on June 20, 168,681 passengers used line 2 of Pune Metro. The trend of high ridership also continued on June 21, as 226,600 commuters travelled on both metro lines.

While 113,366 commuters travelled on line 1, 113,234 passengers used the services on line 2. The Pune Metro emphasised that the ridership on Friday and Saturday was double that of the usual days. Director (public relations and administration) of Pune Metro Hemant Sonawane stated that several passengers used the metro services for the first time.

“Many Warkaris and residents chose the metro not just for convenience, but also to experience the ride for the first time. The ridership is higher compared to the corresponding period during last year’s Wari procession. This year, we started the Civil Court to Swargate stretch, where most of the Warkaris stayed during the Wari. It is a busy part of the city, so many local residents also opted for the metro,” Sonawane was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
