Pune News: In a recent move to enhance safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made wearing helmets compulsory for all employees and officers using two-wheelers. This rule applies both within PMC premises and at ward offices.
Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP has issued a strict directive stating that those without helmets will be denied entry and will not be allowed to park their vehicles. This decision comes amid rising concerns over road accidents, particularly those involving two-wheelers, which often result in serious injuries or fatalities due to a lack of helmet usage. Despite a large population of two-wheeler riders in Pune, compliance has been notably low.
According to a Punekar News report, to enforce this regulation, the city will utilise CCTV cameras to monitor and penalise riders who do not wear helmets. This initiative aligns with the state’s broader effort to reduce road fatalities. Previously, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar mandated helmet use for all government employees and now the PMC has adopted this rule for its own staff.
The directive specifies that employees failing to wear helmets will face disciplinary measures, including fines and marks on their service records, as per the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules of 1981. Department heads are responsible for ensuring their teams adhere to this new regulation.
In separate news, the second Pune Book Festival will take place from December 14 to 22 at Fergusson College ground, organised by the National Book Trust, Deccan Education Society, and Savitribai Phule Pune University. This year’s expanded event will also feature the Pune Literature Festival, bringing together renowned literary figures from across India. With cultural programs, traditional dances, and food stalls, the festival aims to offer a rich cultural experience. Organisers invite Punekars to celebrate books, ideas, and Indian culture at the event.
