Pune Traffic: A video recorded by an Indian commuter in Pune has once again triggered debate on civic sense and road discipline. The man, stuck in traffic in Maharashtra’s Pune, compared the behaviour of drivers in India with that of Germany, pointing out how basic awareness could save lives during emergencies.
In the Instagram clip, the commuter explained that he had experienced traffic jams both in Pune and Germany within days of each other. He noted that in Germany, even on a two-lane road, motorists automatically move aside, those on the left keep to the extreme left and those on the right keep to the extreme right, leaving the middle lane clear. This arrangement, he stressed, does not require new infrastructure but only respect for emergency vehicles like ambulances, police vans or fire engines.
The video drew attention to a common problem in Indian cities, where emergency vehicles often get stuck in long queues of traffic. The delay not only slows down response times but can also put lives at risk.

Online Reactions
The post quickly went viral and attracted thousands of responses. Many users agreed that “lack of civic sense” is the primary issue on Indian roads. One comment read, “If we develop civic sense, India has a lot of potential to grow.” Another added, “The funny thing is that the same people, when driving abroad, easily follow rules.”
Others pointed out that civic sense goes hand in hand with proper infrastructure. “Saying it doesn’t need infrastructure is a stretch. Look at the road width and quality,” one user argued. Another said, “Civic sense exists only when there is empathy for others.”
The video has become part of a larger online conversation about the role of individuals in public safety and whether small behavioural changes could improve traffic conditions in India.
