The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to open a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the Mula-Mutha riverbank under the Riverfront Development (RFD) project, from Sangamwadi to Bund Garden, on February 15, 2026. PMC plans to complete approximately 5 kilometres of riverfront development between Sangamwadi and Kalyani Nagar by the end of March 2026. A formal inauguration is expected to be held in the presence of public representatives and ministers.

The project aims to rejuvenate the riverbanks along the 44-kilometre stretch of the Mula-Mutha River flowing through the city.

“The 90 percent of the work on the stretch from Sangamwadi to Bundgarden is complete. Of the 3.7-km stretch, the development work on a 1.5-km section is finished,” said Prashant Waghmare, city engineer, PMC. 

Site Inspection and Tree Plantation

On Monday, a site inspection of the completed work was conducted in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Estate) Prithviraj BP, Additional Municipal Commissioner (General) Pavneet Kaur, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Special) Omprakash Divte, and City Engineer Prashant Waghmare. During the visit, a tree plantation drive was also carried out to enhance the ecological aspect of the riverfront.

Facilities and Timings for Residents

Residents will be able to use the riverfront for physical exercise and recreational activities during the following hours:

Morning: 6 AM - 9 AM

Evening: 5 PM - 8 PM

The stretch will feature:

Theme parks

Walking paths

Cycling tracks

Civic amenities

The development is designed to provide a natural, eco-friendly environment for walking, cycling, leisure, and other outdoor activities, creating a well-equipped and accessible public space along the riverbanks.

Project Divided Into Three Phases

The PMC has divided the riverfront development into three phases:

Sangamwadi to Bund Garden - 3.7 km (first stretch)

Bund Garden to Mundhwa - 5.5 km

Aundh to Balewadi - 8.1 km

The civic body aims to complete the 5-km stretch from Sangamwadi to Kalyani Nagar by the end of March 2026.

Vision of the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Project

The Mula-Mutha Riverfront Project is envisioned as a transformative urban initiative that balances ecological restoration with modern infrastructure. It will provide Pune residents with improved access to green spaces and a natural, accessible environment along the riverbanks.

On January 26, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, along with Additional Municipal Commissioners Prithviraj BP, Pavneet Kaur, Omprakash Divte, and City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, inspected the completed stretch and carried out a tree plantation drive, highlighting the project’s commitment to ecological enhancement.
