The Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway, which will connect the districts of Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik, is now gaining traction. Meanwhile, the semi-high-speed rail project continues to face delays. The proposal for the expressway is expected to be submitted for government approval soon. Once completed, it will cut travel time between Pune and Nashik from five hours to just three.
The government approved the final design of the highway in February last year. This route will also link to the Surat-Chennai highway, providing added convenience for travelers from other states. With the detailed project report (DPR) and feasibility study now complete, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is preparing to submit the project for final government approval.
Districts To Connect Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway
The 133-kilometer-long expressway is expected to be completed within three years and will require the acquisition of 1,545 hectares of land. The planned route will pass through Khed, Shirur, Ambegaon, and Junnar in Pune district, as well as Sangamner taluka in Ahilyanagar district. This project is anticipated to significantly boost economic development in key industrial hubs such as Ahilyanagar and Nashik.
While the railway project is still awaiting final approval, the industrial expressway has the potential to significantly reduce travel time and offer a faster alternative for commuters and freight movement.
About Pune-Nashik Expressway
As part of the project, 12 major flyovers will be constructed over rivers and streams along the route. Additionally, interchanges will be developed at nine key locations, including Chimbli, Chakan, and Pabal in Pune district, as well as Ahilyanagar, Rajuri, Khandarmal, Sakur, Machi, and Kasare in Nashik district, to ensure smooth access to and from the expressway. The route will also be connected to the Shirdi Marg, enhancing regional connectivity.
In June last year, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar convened a meeting to review the project. He directed officials to assess whether the land proposed for the semi-high-speed rail could also be utilized for the expressway construction. Work on this assessment is currently underway, and the report is awaited.
