As many as two participants of the TATA Mumbai Marathon 2024 died on Sunday. While one of the deceased (75) died of a heart attack, the cause of death for the other person is yet to be ascertained.
Rajendra Chandmal Bora (75) collapsed near Marine Drive in Mumbai after losing consciousness, following which he was rushed to the Bombay Hospital in Marine Lines, where he was declared dead. Bora reportedly left his home at 6 am to participate in the Marathon. Medical examination confirmed it as a natural death. Mumbai's Azad Maidan Police has registered a case under ADR and started further investigation.
Meanwhile, another person, Suvradeep Banerjee, 46, died after participating in the marathon. He reportedly collapsed near the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Worli. Following this he was rushed to the Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central region of the city where he died. The reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained.
West Bengal’s Shyamali Singh, who won the bronze medal at the Marathon on Sunday, had undergone a brain tumour operation a couple of years ago. Four years ago, during the same event, Shyamali complained of vomiting around the halfway mark of the 42-kilometre stretch, something that she and her husband Santosh Singh noticed to be developing into some sort of a pattern.
The 19th edition of the renowned Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM), also the greatest running event in Asia, was organised during the wee hours of Sunday. Around 59,000 participated in the event this year. The marathon kicked off from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
