Thane Ghodbunder Highway: Work on Thane’s key Ghodbunder Highway is expected to finish by January 2026, bringing long-awaited relief to commuters struggling with traffic jams and road diversions. Cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the new deadline on Monday after a review meeting at the Thane Municipal Corporation headquarters.

The highway, which cuts through Thane city and links Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, has been under heavy construction for months. Ongoing works include merging of service lanes with the main carriageway, concretisation of roads and other major repairs. As a result, several lanes are currently closed, causing long delays for vehicles heading towards Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Gujarat and North Maharashtra.

Sarnaik said that all remaining projects on the highway, including resurfacing at the Gaimukh Ghat section, expansion of service roads, laying of new water pipelines and relocation of power lines are being closely monitored. “The aim is to make travel smoother and safer for commuters by January 2026,” he stated.

The Public Works Department (PWD) will also fast-track the process of transferring the entire stretch of the highway to the Thane Municipal Corporation once the resurfacing and repair work is finished. Officials from the traffic police are coordinating with civic engineers to manage lane closures and maintain traffic flow during the final phase of construction.

Besides the highway, several other civic improvement projects are moving ahead in Thane. These include the beautification of Nagla Bandar Creek and Mangrove Park, development of new gardens at Kasarvadavli and Bhayander Pada, the construction of community halls and markets, as well as facilities like the Balasaheb Thackeray Art Gallery, Anandibai Joshi Hospital, and the Lata Mangeshkar Music School. Work on the new swimming pool at Upvan is also progressing.

Sarnaik assured residents that these projects would be completed within set timelines and that regular reviews will be held to ensure faster implementation.
