Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel: The Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, one of Mumbai’s most ambitious infrastructure developments, is making rapid progress and is expected to significantly ease daily travel for lakhs of commuters.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), excavation work at the Thane-side TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) launching shaft, which began in October 2024, is now nearing completion. The Thane casting yard is already operational, while groundwork on the Borivali side is underway. Most of the land acquisition in Thane has been completed,and rehabilitation of Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) in Borivali is currently in progress, the authority said in an update shared on X on November 2.

Key Route To Connect Ghodbunder Road With Western Express Highway
The 11.8-kilometre twin tunnel will connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road directly to the Western Express Highway, providing a faster and smoother commute between the two major suburbs. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce the current travel time of 60 to 90 minutes to just around 15 minutes, offering much-needed relief from Mumbai’s persistent traffic congestion.

Thane- Borivali Twin Tunnel: Designed With Advanced Safety And Environmental Features
The tunnels will pass beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and have been designed to minimise environmental impact while using advanced tunnelling technology. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including an emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres for safety.
The project’s design also includes modern safety features such as ventilation systems, firefighting equipment, smoke detectors, and LED signboards for clear navigation. Officials said the twin tunnels will not only cut travel time but also help reduce pollution and vehicular congestion, marking a major step toward a more efficient urban transport network in Mumbai.
